Make this business year your best yet with 5 successful habits to stick by

Kickstart the year with your best foot forward…

Now the madness of the holiday season’s well and truly over, it’s a perfect opportunity to get your new business year goals in order and give yourself the best start in achieving what you set out to!

Whether it’s business or personal, it’s drive and discipline that’s going to get you there and keeping you motivated when resistance hits.

Get started on the right foot with these five healthy habits, to empower you in making this business year your most successful one yet.

1 Be specific and honest about your goals

Goal setting is the key to success. It’s the only tangible way you can say you’re going to do something and hold yourself accountable to get it done. But sometimes we can be overly ambitious with the goals we set for ourselves, and this can lead to burnout.

Beware of setting goals that are extremely ambitious, to avoid underachieving them. We all want that end of year bonus payout, right?

Instead, set realistic goals that stretch you, (not kill you) to keep motivated and striving for bigger and better. If at the end of the year you’ve outdone yourself, then you know where your bar’s set and you can raise it next year. It’s not just about the end result, it’s about enjoying the process too.

2 Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you

Better to be a small fish in a big pond than the other way around, right?

When it comes to learning and development, there’s no space for egos. By immersing yourself in circles where you find you’re doing more active listening than contributing, is where real learning happens.

Spending valued time with people who have deeper insight pushes us to be better and we become smarter because of it. In all circles, this can open doors for opportunity.

The right circle of influence raises the bar,
helping us to set new, loftier expectations of ourselves.

3 Find and keep your optimum work-life balance

Every one of us is guilty of it – putting business before our personal and family lives. But when we make a habit of it, it takes its toll on our relationships and wellbeing.

And if we’ve learned anything over the last couple of years, it’s how family and friends are irreplaceable. Business on the other hand is fickle and can bounce back.

By actively putting time aside and creating boundaries (in work and life) we maintain a healthy balance for the things that really matter.

4 Ask for support when you need it

Reach out. In times of stress, emotional burden, for advice or support, there is always someone who has the tools and availability to jump in and help you get the job done.

Don’t take on the impossible (if you don’t have to). And don’t struggle alone when you can ask for help.

Remember the feeling of having stressed over something for ages and finally someone stepped in to lend a hand? Suddenly the weight feels lifted and you wondered why you didn’t ask in the first place.

If you notice other areas of your life begin to suffer because of work or stress overload, this is when you know it’s time to reach out.

5 Keep your big vision in sight

Be prepared and resilient to setbacks. This is a mindset that will benefit you when things get tough and when you end up off track.

Working back to the bigger picture each time helps to keep your goals in check, and making the right decisions for the direction you’re heading in.

It can be easy to get caught up in the detail with what seems important at the time, but if it doesn’t get you a step closer to your goals is it time well-spent?

Delegate what can be done to others and don’t sweat the smaller stuff.

Putting egos aside, maintaining a fine balance and keeping your focus in-check is a healthy recipe for making this business year your best yet.
